An estimated 160,000 people visited Imperial Palace on Jan. 2, 1956, to offer New Year congratulations to the emperor and his family. The well-wishers thronged along the route from Palace Plaza to Double Bridge and to the palace compound. Meiji Palace that used to stand in the compound burned down during the war and the land (center) was cleared.
