池袋駅周辺 - Ikebukuro & vicinity

  1960(昭和35)年2月19日、池袋駅と東京拘置所(右上の黒っぽい建物と白っぽい建物が計6棟並んでいる箇所)の周辺。東京拘置所の前身の巣鴨拘置所は戦後GHQ(連合国軍総司令部)が接収し「スガモプリズン」と呼ばれ、東条英機ら東京裁判のA級戦犯が収容、処刑されたところ。
  同拘置所は1971(昭和46)年3月に小菅へ移転し、跡地は「サンシャインシティ」となり、1978(昭和53)年4月、60階建ての超高層ビル「サンシャイン60」が竣工し、当時は日本一の高さを誇った。

Sugamo Detention House, a predecessor to Tokyo Detention House, was seized by General Headquarters of Allied Powers and called Sugamo Prison where former wartime Prime Minister Hideki Tojo and other Class-A war criminals were held and executed.
   In March 1971, the detention house was relocated to Kosuge, Katsushika Ward. Sunshine City was built on the former detention house site and the 60-story Sunshine 60, Japan’s tallest skyscraper then, was completed in April 1978.
