Demonstrations (Diet Building & Prime Minister's Official Residence)

On June 18, 1960, some 330,000 demonstrators surrounded Diet Building in protest against the signing of a new Japan-U.S. Security Treaty. The demonstration occurred a day before the security treaty was to be automatically enacted following the ramming through the Diet of legislation for the pact. Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi and his Cabinet resigned en masse on June 23 after exchanging instruments of ratification for the treaty.
On the night of June 29, 2012, demonstrators filled the streets in front of Prime Minister’s Official Residence (upper right) to protest against the restart of No. 3 reactor of Oi Nuclear Power Plant run by Kansai Electric Power Co. Anti-nuclear rallies began every Friday from the end of March and the number of protesters swelled to 200,000 a day.
